Amygdala and Co: wingwave® Coaching and the Fear Memory in our Brain
Thre regions in particular play an important role in the daily processing of information in our brain:
The hippocampus, amygdala, and prefrontal cortex. Our learning center is located in the hippocampus.
There, learned information is transported from short to long-term memory. In the amygdala, also known as the 'almond kernel' because of its shape, the emotional content of an experience is evaluated and processed. As part of the so-called limbic system, this region reacts particularly to threats.
The amygdala plays an important role in the formation of a "frozen" fear memory. What happens there is controlled in the prefrontal cortex. In the event of severe stress, threat or trauma, these brain regions no longer work together in a balanced manner.
The activity of the amygdala increases, while the function of the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex is reduced.
